striving

to look for good things in a dreary world,
but also, inexplicably, expecting it.
the thought that an old lady was mugged
makes you remember how wonderful your grandma is
and how nothing will ever happen to her
because this world is cruel,
but not to you.

you expect the husband to come home for his baby
like he did in the commercial
but sometimes they don't.
sometimes, women get rid of their children
sometimes, it's for a better life, but other times, it's not.
and of course you think,
i will never be this cruel.

we're all striving to make a difference,
but differences in our lives are often acceptable
to us, we who want the world to be perfect.
and there is good. much good. but it's
overclouded by semeritans and muggers.
